Masked protester urges participants to 'kill' ICE agents during demonstration in Los Angeles

A masked individual was filmed spray-painting a federal building in Los Angeles with a threatening message that read “Kill your local ICE agents,” accompanied by two targeted names.

This incident occurred amid a large “No Kings” protest, where demonstrators paraded through downtown Los Angeles. Participants, hiding their identities with scarves that concealed most of their faces, were seen vandalizing. The graffiti sparked strong reactions, including from conservative commentator Greg Price, who suggested that this kind of threat underscores why U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents often keep their identities secret while on duty. “This is why ICE agents wear masks… because they’re perfectly fine with harming and killing these people,” he remarked on social media.

In response, ICE issued a statement on social media warning that anyone who threatens their agents or their families would face severe legal consequences. “Our brave men and women face the threat of death every day just like this,” a spokesperson added, reiterating that those who made the threats would be held accountable.

Andrew Corbett, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, described the actions of the protesters as primarily driven by pacifists. In contrast, independent journalist Nick Souter expressed outrage, questioning why such disruptive behavior continues uncurbed. He foresees that the situation might escalate as summer approaches.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of ongoing funding issues for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) due to a partial government shutdown. Congressional disputes over immigration enforcement have led some Democrats to link new funding for ICE with specific reforms, including proposals to prohibit federal immigration officials from wearing masks.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries recently urged Republicans to require agents to uncover their faces, framing the unmasking as a necessary step to ensure public safety and support for addressing the DHS funding crisis.

Tom Homan, the director of border protection at the White House, defended the use of masks, citing a rise in attacks and threats against ICE personnel. He acknowledged, “I don’t like masks either,” but emphasized that agents must prioritize their safety. An anonymous ICE agent had previously stated that agents wouldn’t conceal their identities if they weren’t concerned about the safety of their families.

The DHS condemned the push to unmask agents as “irresponsible, reckless and dangerous,” asserting they would not comply with such measures, labelling them unconstitutional. The increasing tensions and protests, however, continue to complicate immigration enforcement efforts, leaving agents feeling vulnerable.
