Mayor Daniel Rodrick advises resident to 'find employment' during intense Toms River town council meeting

A mayor in New Jersey confronted a citizen during a recent council meeting, telling her to “get a job” and questioning if she was still living in her parents’ basement. This exchange occurred when Toms River Mayor Daniel Rodrick responded to resident Dana Tormollan, who accused him of sending political correspondence along with her tax bill on October 19.

“I told you to stop sending me this crap,” Tormollan stated, approaching the microphone during the public comment portion of the Toms River Township Council meeting.

Rodrick denied sending her anything and then provocatively asked, “Did you get a job yet, Dana?” He further mocked her by asking if she still resided in her basement, eliciting groans from the audience.

When Tormollan attempted to respond, Rodrick interrupted her with more questions about her living situation, chuckling at his own comments.

“I live in my own house and pay my own bills, so back off, jackass, because you’re collecting benefits on these people’s backs. You’re a piece of crap. Shut up,” Tormollan shot back, clearly frustrated.

Rodrick retorted, “Right, right, get a job,” even as Tormollan insisted that she did work. The exchange escalated, with voices rising throughout the room as others joined the argument.

The confrontation reached a climax after Council President David Ciccozzi urged Rodrick to stop interrupting public comments.

Tormollan claimed she received a letter from Rodrick’s office detailing his accomplishments, which she called misleading after receiving her tax bill. She expressed intentions to come forward about wasting taxpayer resources on “political nonsense.”

During her public statement, she questioned the accuracy of the figures in Rodrick’s letter, but was dismissed by him and his supporters, who accused her of lying.

“It’s right here, you jackass,” Tormollan said, slamming the letter down in front of Rodrick.

Feeling particularly heated, Tormollan later noted that she was upset not just for herself but because Rodrick had previously mocked older women who had spoken at the meeting before her. “If he was speaking to my mother that way, I would not sit here… It’s really gross and extremely unprofessional,” she remarked.

Following this incident, the council voted 4-3 in favor of a resolution of no confidence against Rodrick, citing “reprehensible behavior, disruption of official proceedings, and violations of decorum.” This came after Rodrick had previously survived a recall effort earlier in the year, when opponents failed to gather enough signatures to prompt an election against him.
