Mayor Johnson stands firm on Trump's upcoming National Guard deployment following a weekend of violence

Chicago Protest over National Security Deployment

The atmosphere was charged as demonstrators gathered around the Haymarket Memorial for a Labor Day march, voicing concerns about the possible deployment of national security personnel. President Donald Trump has indicated an intention to enforce similar crackdowns in cities like Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the protestors, openly criticizing the Trump administration’s approach to public safety in Chicago, which includes increasing federal law enforcement presence.

“Are you ready to protect this land? This land was built by slaves. It was built by indigenous peoples. It was built by workers,” he urged the enthusiastic crowd before leading a chant of “No Chicago Army!”

The protest saw various flags, including Mexican ones and those from other Latin American nations. This display came after it was announced that Immigration Secretary Christa Noem would be sending additional immigration agents to the city, categorized as a sanctuary city. While the crowd marched through a neighborhood close to the Loop, they notably avoided areas with higher crime rates, like Humboldt Park and Englewood.

Meanwhile, Johnson and other state Democrats remain steadfast in their opposition to federal actions against urban crime, despite a troubling uptick in violence over Labor Day weekend, which saw over 50 people shot. Some incidents were notably mass shootings occurring just hours apart, with one even taking place near Chicago’s own police headquarters.

Critics like Alderman Raymond Lopez challenged Johnson’s stance, questioning how many crimes he would tolerate in pursuit of political ideals. Lopez argued that tools necessary to protect Chicagoans from violence and drug trafficking should not be dismissed.

He also suggested that the National Guard be employed to secure tourist areas, noting that local police are overwhelmed, with thousands of 911 calls going unanswered.
