Chicago Mayor Responds to Trump’s Comments

On Saturday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson addressed comments made by former President Donald Trump, urging residents to unite and “protect Chicago from Donald Trump.” This call came in response to a post Trump made on a social media platform where he mentioned, “I love the smell of morning deportation,” and questioned the terminology surrounding military involvement.

Attached to Trump’s post was an image of him capturing shots of the Chicago skyline, featuring a fire and a helicopter, with the caption “Chipocalypse Now” scrawled across the corner.

In his rebuttal on social media, Johnson remarked, “The president’s threat undermines our nation’s honor; his intentions seem to include taking over our city and disregarding our constitutional rights.”

A coalition known as Trump’s Agenda (CATA), along with at least a dozen other groups, has organized a rally at Congressional Plaza Gardens at 5 PM to address Trump’s threats of deploying federal troops, which have been made without any local or state requests for assistance.

A representative from CATA described Trump’s assertions about rising crime rates in Chicago as “false” and that they serve as a pretext for advancing a racially motivated agenda targeting immigrants.

Frank Chapman, from the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, pointed out that violent crime in the city has actually seen a decline since 2019. He noted that Chicago residents recognize Trump as “a racist and a liar” and have opposed his policies vigorously.

The timing of the rally has raised questions, particularly why it was set for a later hour when daylight is limited.

There have also been discussions among protest organizers concerning a preemptive response plan for if federal forces are deployed before 3 PM, promising to gather at the same location the next day if needed. The Union has emphasized the importance of solidarity among protesters in resistance to what they perceive as an increase in attacks on working-class and marginalized communities.

This escalation follows Trump’s previously suggested federal presence in windy cities, raising concerns among Democratic leaders including Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who have actively pushed back against such measures.

Meanwhile, Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez has voiced a different opinion on the Fox News Channel, suggesting that increased federal assistance could be beneficial. He stated, “Our statistics are improving, and it’s frustrating that some of my Democratic colleagues oppose any additional help.”
