New York City Mayoral Candidate Mamdani’s Bold Statements
Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate for mayor in New York City, recently declared victory in the Democratic primary. However, he stirred controversy earlier by stating that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited the city.
During an interview on MSNBC with journalist Mehdi Hasan, Mamdani was asked whether he would welcome Netanyahu to New York. Despite the complexities surrounding international law, particularly regarding the International Criminal Court (ICC), Mamdani firmly stated, “No. As mayor, New York City will arrest Benjamin Netanyahu.” He emphasized that the city’s values align with international law, suggesting a strong stance on the issue.
Hasan pressed Mamdani regarding the ICC’s jurisdiction, especially since Israel is not a member state. Back in February, former President Donald Trump had signed an executive order concerning the ICC, responding to an arrest warrant against Netanyahu issued in May 2024. Mamdani remarked on the need for local leadership that counters what he perceives as federal shortcomings.
In a speech earlier this month at a synagogue in Manhattan, Mamdani reiterated his stance on arresting Netanyahu, comparing it to how the city should address violations of international law by leaders like Vladimir Putin. He stressed that cities should uphold their commitments to international treaties.
Interestingly, Mamdani has voiced support for the idea that “Israel has the right to exist with equal rights to everyone.” His remarks convey a complex relationship with various issues surrounding Israel, though he seems cautious in his approach, perhaps trying to balance different viewpoints.
Reports from watchdog group Canary Mission claim that Mamdani has been involved in anti-Israel protests, notably after the tragic events of October 7, 2023, which resulted in significant loss of life. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University, was also cited as being connected to anti-Israel sentiment in the academic space.
In his victory speech, Mamdani envisioned a New York City that would reject the “fascism” of Donald Trump, highlighting his intention to govern in a manner that aligns with his Democratic values.
Despite several requests, there has been no immediate response from Mamdani’s camp regarding these statements and issues.
