Mexican president turns down Trump’s proposal for U.S. troops to assist in battling drug cartels.

Sheinbaum Rejects U.S. Military Aid Offer

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has confirmed that she turned down an offer for military assistance from former President Donald Trump.

In response to a report from the Wall Street Journal detailing the conversation, Sheinbaum acknowledged, “That’s true.” Trump had reportedly asked her how he could assist in combating drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum clearly stated to Trump that she would “never accept” U.S. troops on Mexican soil. “No, President Trump, our territory is inviolable, and sovereignty is non-negotiable,” she emphasized. She suggested there could be collaborative efforts but insisted they should occur independently within their respective territories.

White House assistant reporter Anna Kelly noted in a written statement about ongoing cooperation with Mexico to address border security issues. She remarked that Trump had elevated his initiatives with Mexico to unprecedented levels, resulting in tangible outcomes, such as the apprehension of various cartel leaders.

Trump’s administration has employed CIA drones for surveillance within Mexico in partnership with the Mexican government, and he has labeled drug cartels as “foreign terrorist” organizations. However, Kelly highlighted that more needs to be done by Mexico to protect Americans from these threats.

“We’ll continue exploring ways to enhance regional efforts to dismantle these cross-border criminal networks,” Kelly asserted, adding a commitment to making the U.S. safe again.

The Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank, had previously released a report on how military action could be used to address the border crisis. It noted the increasing influence of cartels and raised concerns over illegal immigration and drug smuggling, suggesting that direct military intervention should be a last resort while preferring coordinated actions with Mexico.

Despite the complexities and potential risks associated with cartel activities, the foundation expressed skepticism about any significant shift in Mexico’s stance, particularly with Sheinbaum in office.
