Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum this week argued that migrant caravans are no longer reaching the U.S.-Mexico border, citing renewed threats of high tariffs from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Her comments highlighted rising tensions as President Trump plans to tighten immigration policies and impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico. President Trump declared that the tariffs would remain in place “until we stop drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal aliens from invading our country.”
“The caravan of migrants is no longer reaching the border,” Sheinbaum said Tuesday, presenting a letter he plans to send to President Trump in the coming days. He also highlighted Mexico's efforts to curb the distribution of drugs, including the synthetic opioid fentanyl, noting that drugs remain “a public health and consumption issue in our society.”
