Rapper Vanilla Ice shared his thoughts about performing at the America 250 event, emphasizing how music can bring people together despite their political differences. He addressed the ongoing debates regarding artists engaging in political matters, offering his viewpoint as an entertainer.
Mick Jagger Discusses the Role of Entertainers
In a recent conversation on the New York Times podcast, Mick Jagger spoke candidly about what he sees as his role as a musician. The 82-year-old frontman of the Rolling Stones expressed his belief that his primary focus is ensuring that the audience enjoys themselves during the show.
“My key goal is simply to provide a fantastic experience,” he explained. “People come to leave their worries behind, even if it’s just for a couple of hours.”
He likened attending a concert to going to a sports event, where the excitement is palpable. “It’s all about who wins,” Jagger noted. “Everything else can wait.” He made it clear he isn’t there to lecture or “preach” to the crowd.
Despite his reluctance to preach during performances, he does feel comfortable weaving his opinions into his lyrics or bringing up social issues. “I tend to write about personal relationships but then include bits on politics,” he mentioned. “I think it’s a technique borrowed from watching other songwriters because no one wants a full-on political song.”
While his intention is to entertain, he did stir some controversy during a performance in New Orleans back in May 2024 when he made remarks about the governor of Louisiana.
He called out Governor Jeff Landry, saying, “We’re a welcoming bunch here, aren’t we? I hope Mr. Landry enjoys the performance. He’s really bringing us back to the Stone Age.”
Less than thrilled, the governor fired back on social media, joking about Jagger’s age: “You don’t always get what you want. The only person who might remember the Stone Age is Mick Jagger. Love you buddy, you’re always welcome in Louisiana!”
