Mick Jagger Advises Singers to Stay Away from Politics During Performances After Bruce Springsteen Criticizes Trump: 'Don't Lecture' Your Audience

Mick Jagger on Politics in Music

Legendary frontman Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones has shared his thoughts on the role of politics in music, contrasting his approach with that of Bruce Springsteen. In a recent discussion with New York Times correspondent David Marchese, it was noted that some artists, especially those from the far-left, feel the need to express political views during concerts.

Marchese suggested that Springsteen perceives his role as one of engaging meaningfully with his audience. This raises the question: does the audience actually get a chance to interact, or is it more of a one-sided exchange? With Springsteen, it often feels like everything is delivered straight from the stage.

When Jagger was asked for his opinion on this, he dismissed the idea that Springsteen’s approach, which some might call hectoring, is effective.

“For me, my job when performing live is about giving people the best time possible,” Jagger explained. He emphasized that the goal is for attendees to escape their everyday concerns—whether it’s worries about the world or personal pressures—and just enjoy themselves.

He likened the experience to that of attending a sports event, where, amidst the chaos, the focus is simply on the outcome. “I’m just there to see who wins,” he remarked, indicating that he’s not interested in anything beyond that moment.

“I don’t want to preach to them,” Jagger added, referring to his audience.

On the other hand, Bruce Springsteen, who is 76, seems to embrace the role of political commentator during his shows. He has openly expressed his disdain for figures like Donald Trump, viewing his political messages as a point of pride.

This approach has its consequences. For instance, during a concert, Springsteen has labeled Trump and his supporters as “racists” and “traitors.” As he embarks on a politically charged tour across America, he frequently shares extensive speeches, layering his performances with political commentary.
