Microsoft dismisses worker who disrupted CEO’s speech to protest AI technology for Israel.

Microsoft terminated employees who interrupted CEO Satya Nadella’s speech during a protest against the company’s involvement in supplying technology to the Israeli military amid the conflict in Gaza.

Software engineer Joe Lopez was vocal in expressing dissent, reportedly shouting at Nadella during the initial moments of the company’s annual developer conference in Seattle, before being removed from the venue. After the incident, Lopez shared numerous emails with colleagues challenging Microsoft’s assertions regarding the use of their Azure Cloud Computing platform in Gaza.

This outburst was just the first of multiple pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the event, which drew a large crowd of software developers to the Seattle Convention Center. Executive speeches were interrupted, and the audio for one live-streamed presentation was briefly cut. Protesters also gathered outside the conference center.

Microsoft has a history of firing employees who protested company activities related to Israel, including an event held to mark the company’s 50th anniversary in April.

Recently, Microsoft acknowledged that it provides AI services to Israeli forces operating in Gaza but stated that there is no evidence that its Azure platform or AI technologies have been used to target civilians in the area.

No Azure, an advocacy group comprised of current and former employees, indicated that Lopez was issued a termination letter following the protest, though he couldn’t open it. The group also claims that Microsoft has blocked internal communications that mention terms like “Palestine” and “Gaza.”

As of now, Microsoft has not commented on its stance regarding this week’s demonstrations. The four-day conference is set to conclude on Thursday.
