Reuters quoted Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa as saying that Japan plans to lift its suspension of funding to the United Nations Palestine Refugee Agency, Unruwa.

In January, the Japanese government decided to suspend additional funding to the agency while it conducted an investigation into allegations that its staff were involved in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the Gaza war.

Israel’s accusations led 16 countries, including the United States, to suspend $450 million in funding to Unrwa, throwing its operations into turmoil. The agency is the largest relief agency operating in the Gaza Strip, which has been besieged by Israel since the attacks.

Countries such as Australia, Canada, Finland and Sweden have since restored funding to Unruwa, and some Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, have increased funding.

According to Unrwa’s 2022 data, Japan is the sixth largest donor to the agency.

A little bit about World Central Kitchen (WCK): This US-based charity provides food assistance and prepares meals for people in need.

According to Reuters, the chef Jose andres started WCK in 2010 by sending cooks and food to Haiti after the earthquake. Since then, the organization has delivered food to communities affected by natural disasters, refugees at the U.S. border, health care workers during the coronavirus pandemic, and people caught up in conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.

In its latest post published on Monday’s X, WCK said its teams are mobilizing daily across Gaza to distribute food to displaced Palestinians.
