A bipartisan group of New York City lawmakers calls on embattled Mayor Eric Adams to launch an effort to remove gang members from the city's immigrant shelters “as a matter of urgent public safety.” I am doing it.
City Council Minority Leader Joe Borelli (R-Staten Island) on Thursday cited the growing influence of the Venezuelan street gang Torren de Argua, joining five Republicans and four Democrats to approve the Published a letter addressed to the mayor.
“Foreign-based criminal organizations like Torren de Aragua are responsible for organized theft, robbery, assault, sex trafficking and, in some cases, murder,” the city councilor said. I wroteAccording to new york post.
“This is supported by numerous media reports, victim and witness statements, and NYPD data showing a spike in these crime patterns in areas near immigrant shelters,” Borelli continued. Ta.
“Unfortunately, recent criminal justice reforms in this city and state, combined with sanctuary city laws, allow these criminal aliens to operate with impunity,” he wrote.
Arrests within the city's evacuation centers are rapidly increasing. The arrest rate has increased every year since 2020, with 924 people arrested in 2020. 1,045 people in 2021. In 2022, the number will increase to 1,600.
The newspaper added that the number is expected to rise again this year, with the number of arrests expected to reach around 2,336 by the end of this year. This is an increase of 64% compared to last year. It will also be a 91% increase compared to 2021.
“We believe it is a reasonable standard to require residents of taxpayer-funded housing not to commit crimes or associate with those who have committed crimes,” Borelli's letter said. “This is a standard that also applies to federal public housing,” he added.
“While we don’t all agree on how to fix our nation’s broken immigration system or whether the city should protect non-citizens, New York state taxpayers are willing to help all of us. “We agree that criminal activities that endanger the public should not be subsidized,” they continued.
“And other than political will, there is no law, no court order, no policy, nothing that can stop us from ending this injustice,” the politicians continued.
The letter was signed by Democrats Mercedes Narcisse, Susan Chuan, Kalman Jaeger and Robert Holden, and Republicans Joanne Arriola, Vicki Palladino, Inna Vernikov, Kristi Marmorato and David Carr.
Adams agreed that the city has a responsibility to protect shelters from gang violence and insisted he and council members “want the same thing.”
“No one should come here to our city and inflict violence on everyday New Yorkers,” the mayor added, pledging to “find out what's going on.” [they are] I'm talking about. ”
Adams also noted that city immigration officials do not conduct “criminal background checks on guests” when admitting them to city shelters. But violating the code of conduct could result in certain migrants losing their place in the shelter, mayoral spokeswoman Amaris Cockfield explained.
Dangerous Venezuelan street gangs are a growing threat in the United States, spreading to more than a dozen states, according to the Center for a Safe and Free Society.
last week, new york post reported that the gang recruits teens it dubs the “Devils of 42nd Street” to commit robberies and violent crimes throughout the city. “Los Diablos de la 42” is made up of up to 20 teens and boys, several of whom have been arrested multiple times.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials also reported the arrest of a man on suspicion of second-degree assault of an NYPD officer in a story that made headlines on every newscast earlier this year.
