Minnesota social service workers criticize Governor Tim Walz as fully accountable for $1 billion state fraud

Numerous employees from the Minnesota Department of Human Services have openly criticized Governor Tim Walz for allowing a major fraud scandal to occur under his administration while also allegedly retaliating against those who spoke out.

This scandal, known as the “Feeding Our Future” fraud episode, has resulted in over $1 billion in taxpayer dollars being defrauded by a variety of scammers in what is being called the largest case of COVID-19 fraud in the nation.

“Tim Walz is utterly responsible for the massive fraud in Minnesota. We warned him about the fraud early on, hoping to assist in halting it, but instead, we faced backlash,” they stated.

They claimed, “Walz systematically retaliated against whistleblowers with intimidation and surveillance, making efforts to undermine the fraud report. Instead of collaborating with us, we bore the brunt of the retaliation.”

One employee described the experience as “scary and isolating,” expressing uncertainty about whom to trust.

Recently, the Department of Justice has indicted the 78th individual in connection with this fraud scheme, with at least 59 guilty verdicts so far.

For the past several years, fraudsters have exploited Minnesota’s robust social safety net, establishing companies to bill for social services that never materialized.

Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit founded in 2016 to provide meals to schoolchildren, worked with many local businesses to offer food assistance.

However, after dissolving in 2022, the nonprofit and its affiliates sued the state for assisting in feeding numerous low-income children, even as much of the funding ended up misspent on luxury items and overseas real estate ventures.

Other organizations besides Feeding Our Future have also been implicated in fraudulent activities within Minnesota’s safety net.

The scheme predominantly involved individuals from the Somali community, of which approximately 80,000 reside in Minnesota.

A Minnesota DHS employee stated, “As employees, we witnessed the fraud firsthand, but we were silenced, reassigned, and instructed to keep quiet.”

Some leaders were hesitant to act against fraudulent activities due to concerns about their public image and the potential appearance of discrimination.

Federal authorities began arresting individuals tied to Feeding Our Future in 2022, discovering extensive fraud during their investigations.

For instance, a homelessness program launched in 2021 with a budget of $2.6 million saw costs balloon to $104 million last year due to pervasive fraud.

“Minnesota turned into a hotspot for fraud under Tim Walz,” remarked House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, highlighting the scandal’s ramifications for rule-abiding residents.

This troubling situation has caught the attention of former President Trump, who criticized Minnesota as a “center of illicit money laundering.” In response, Walz argued that while federal prosecutors led many of the charges, “I am the one putting people in prison.” He also accused Trump of deflecting responsibility and failing to offer solutions.

The Minnesota DHS employee’s account further elaborated that Walz’s administration had weakened security measures and reduced the authority of the Legislative Audit Office during this troubling period.

The employees posited, “This reflects a series of systemic failures traceable to Tim Walz, as agency leaders silenced wrongdoing reports and even intimidated whistleblowers’ families.”

They emphasized the need for federal help, stating, “We cannot tackle fraud in Minnesota alone.”

The newspaper has reached out to Walz’s office for a response.

Walz has begun his campaign for a third term as governor, despite Minnesota being one of the few states without term limits for that position. Historically, no Minnesota governor has been elected for a third term since the four-year gubernatorial term was established back in 1963.
