A new poll shows more Americans want President Biden to urge Israel to halt military operations in Gaza.
new CBS News Poll It found that 37% of Americans want Biden to urge Israel to end its military operations in Gaza, a slight increase from the 31% who said the same in February. A new poll found an additional 23% said Biden should encourage Israel to reduce its military operations in Gaza.
Biden has stepped up his criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent weeks as Israel continues its war with the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Biden last week called Netanyahu’s approach to the war “a mistake.”
According to the poll, only 12% of respondents said Biden should encourage Israel to step up military action in Gaza. Another 28% said Biden should direct Israel to keep its military operations the same, down from 32% who said so in February.
Overall, 33 percent of respondents said they approve of Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, the lowest percentage the CBS News poll has recorded since the war began. That’s down from the 38% who supported Biden’s response in February, and down from the 44% who supported him in October.
The poll, conducted before Iran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel, also found that most Americans do not want the United States to take military action if Iran attacks Israel.Iran launched a massive airstrike against Israel on Saturday, but most of the attacks were thwarted with US support
25% said the US should take military action, 42% said the US should support Israel’s actions but not get involved militarily, and 32% said the US should not get involved at all.
The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted April 9-12 among 2,399 U.S. adults and had a margin of error of 2.6 percentage points.
