Most Americans Now Disagree with Economic and Military Aid for Israel

Poll Reveals Shift in American Support for Israel

A recent poll by the New York Times and Siena University shows that a significant number of Americans oppose providing economic and military support to Israel. According to the survey, just 19% of registered U.S. voters strongly approve of such aid, while only 20% somewhat support it. In contrast, 35% of respondents are strongly against more assistance, with an additional 16% expressing mild opposition. The national survey engaged 1,313 registered voters from September 22 to September 27.

Overall, support for Israeli assistance stands at 39%, whereas 51% of participants are against it. The findings indicate a notable collapse of support among younger voters. For those aged 18 to 29, 68% oppose economic and military aid, while 62% of voters between 30 and 44 feel similarly.

Interestingly, amongst older Americans aged over 65, support for aid to Israel rises considerably, with 54% indicating approval. This stark contrast in opinion points to distinct generational divides.

When asked about sympathies, the poll found that 34% of surveyed voters feel more aligned with Israel, while 35% sympathize with the Palestinians. Among younger voters, however, a pronounced empathy for Palestinians emerged: 43% of 18 to 29-year-olds expressed strong sympathy for them, compared to just 7% who felt the same for Israel. Additionally, 27% of voters aged 30-44 showed strong sympathy for Palestinians, contrasted with 14% expressing feelings for Israel.

The data underscores a growing disconnect between Israeli messaging and the beliefs of younger Americans. Following a controversial speech by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the UN, various delegates staged a walkout in protest. Reports have surfaced about Netanyahu engaging with U.S. influencers to strategize pro-Israel messaging.

One of these influencers, Debra Lee, a Fox News commentator, faced accusations of being financially supported by Israel during a recent panel discussion. She denied these claims during her appearance.

Meanwhile, some pro-Israel billionaires are reportedly involved in significant transactions related to TikTok, including Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison. Ellison has claimed that former President Donald Trump was a “very big role” in the deal, which is rumored to involve Oracle acquiring a 15% stake in TikTok, positioning it as a “security provider” for the app.

Currently, Ellison ranks as the second wealthiest person globally and is noted as a leading private donor to the Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces (FIDF).

In conclusion, this shifting public sentiment indicates that Israel faces challenges in its battle for favor, particularly among younger demographics. The expanded use of influencers and billionaire partnerships to sway public opinion highlights the urgent need to regain lost support. Yet, this strategy might not be as effective as anticipated.
