Musk proposes to cover TSA salaries as Trump thinks about deploying ICE agents to airports

TSA Salary Support Amid Government Shutdown

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has proposed to cover the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees affected by the ongoing partial government shutdown. In a somewhat surprising twist, President Donald Trump has suggested deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to help alleviate security line delays at airports.

Musk shared on X early Saturday, “During this funding gridlock that is negatively impacting the lives of so many Americans at airports across the country, I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA employees.”

How this plan would be executed remains uncertain, as civil servants typically aren’t allowed to accept outside payments for their work.

Recent months have seen TSA employees facing multiple shutdowns. Last fall, during the longest government shutdown recorded in U.S. history, they worked without pay for 43 days due to Senate Democrats withholding budget approval in exchange for an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies set to lapse at the end of 2025.

More recently, on February 14, the Senate could not agree on a budget for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Senate Democrats advocated for stricter regulations on Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and ICE.

Trump’s suggested solution diverges significantly from Musk’s offer.

He stated on Truth Social, “If the radical left Democrats do not immediately sign a deal that makes our country, especially our airports, free and safe again, I will move our talented, patriotic ICE officers to our airports and provide security there like no one has ever seen before.”

He elaborated on the potential role of ICE agents at airports, hinting they could swiftly detain illegal immigrants, particularly referencing certain immigrant groups he holds responsible for issues in Minnesota.

This commentary stems from recent allegations surrounding an immigration scam uncovered by independent reporters, leading to what is referred to as Operation Metro Surge, where numerous immigration officers were dispatched to Minnesota. The scheme involved organizations that claimed to provide childcare and social services, but were allegedly misusing government funds.

“We look forward to seeing ICE in action at our airports,” Trump concluded.

Just last week, TSA employees missed their initial complete paycheck due to funding issues from February, which has prompted some to seek alternative employment or even leave their positions. This has resulted in extended wait times at airport security, causing frustration among travelers nationwide.

During this turmoil, Trump took to Truth Social to commend police officers for their commitment, urging them to remain resolute as Democrats stalled funding approval.

“Keep fighting for America. Go to work! I promise I’ll never forget you!!!” he expressed.
