Dearborn Residents React to Street Naming Controversy

In Dearborn, Michigan, tensions have risen after local residents expressed discomfort over the city’s decision to name two intersections after figures perceived as terrorist sympathizers. This marks the first Arab-American majority city in the U.S. in 2023, stirring significant debate among its residents.

During a city council meeting on September 9th, Christian resident Ted Burham spoke out against this decision. He voiced his concern regarding a sign placed on Warren Avenue, named after Osama Siblani, publisher of Arab American News. Burham emphasized his disapproval, arguing that while Siblani contributes positively to the community, he also promotes organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas.

As Burham made his points, council members quickly suspended him, claiming that this matter fell outside their jurisdiction and that the signage was established by Wayne County. Yet, despite the officials urging him to address his worries at the county level, Burham suggested that individuals present would not turn up to the ceremony without voicing their opinions.

Burham has cited quotes from Siblani that he interprets as inciting violence, including remarks about how different groups fight—some with stones, others with more lethal means. The council, however, countered that Siblani has never encouraged violence worldwide and accused Burham of misrepresenting the meaning behind his words.

Burham went further to suggest that soon there could be street names like “Hezbollah Street” or “Hamas Street,” reflecting his belief that the impact of such naming is problematic. He claimed he was advocating for peace rather than division.

In a heated exchange, Mayor Abdullah Hammaud responded sharply to Burham’s accusations of hypocrisy, labeling him a bigot and suggesting his presence in Dearborn was unwelcome. Hammaud insisted that Burham’s actions contradicted the spirit of coexistence and understanding that the community strives for.

The mayor emphasized his pride in his cultural heritage and connectedness to America, recalling his journey to the country with minimal resources. He lamented the community’s inability to respect its diversity, citing it as critical in creating a unified society.

Despite this clash, the city council hasn’t issued an official statement on the matter, leaving many residents seeking clarity on how this incident will affect community relations going forward.
