The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) didn't ask Vice President Kamala Harris a single question about criminal justice reform during her onstage interview on Tuesday.
In 2020, after the killing of George Floyd sparked protests and riots across the country, NABJ It is called The need for reform is “more urgent than ever.”
And the issue has been central to Harris' past campaigns and her record: After losing the 2020 presidential election, she laughed and admitted to using marijuana herself after being grilled onstage by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) about her record of jailing thousands of low-level offenders as San Francisco's district attorney.
Harris also went after parents whose children were not attending school, a policy that in other places led to parents being harassed or even jailed, and her policies disproportionately affected disadvantaged black parents.
Perhaps most notorious, as California's attorney general, Harris allowed thousands of nonviolent prisoners to remain locked up, many of them black, even after the Supreme Court ordered the state to release them. In defending California, Harris said the state need They were forced to do labor to help put out forest fires.
In 2020, Harris voiced her support for Black Lives Matter, raised bail funds for rioters in Minneapolis, and appeared outside the White House to join so-called “peaceful” protesters just hours after they assaulted police officers and journalists.
NABJ included one question about whether black male voters were considering voting for former President Donald Trump for economic reasons, but no questions about criminal justice reform or Harris' record as a prosecutor.
The ABC News whistleblower claims that the Harris campaign demanded, and ABC granted, a promise that the hosts would not ask questions about Harris' tenure as California's attorney general. ABC News Denied These include handing debate questions to Harris' campaign and agreeing to fact-check Trump during the debate but not Harris.
Trump spoke to NABJ in July and was grilled by several hostile questioners (Harris declined the invitation then).
