National Guard Troops Activate in Washington, D.C.
National Guard troops were spotted in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, following President Donald Trump’s initiative to enhance law enforcement in the area to tackle rising crime rates.
According to reports, military vehicles were visible on the streets as residents moved about. The total number of troops deployed remains unclear.
Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed that she was in discussions with federal officials to effectively manage the increased law enforcement presence. “My goal is to maximize the federal surge we’re getting,” she stated. “We’ll ensure that the officers from federal agencies and the National Guard are effectively utilized.”
This action came after Trump ordered federal authorities to patrol D.C. streets for a week, with a focus on violent crimes. The push is led by the U.S. Parks Police, along with other federal entities like the FBI, DEA, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Trump had earlier issued an executive order establishing a task force aimed at ensuring federal compliance with immigration laws in the district. This initiative has sparked some criticism, with Mayor Bowser calling the president’s actions “unstable and unprecedented.” Nonetheless, she remarked that, given the context of previous rhetoric, the situation isn’t entirely unexpected.
The DC Police Union voiced support for Trump’s directive, acknowledging the urgency of the crime situation. The union’s chairman expressed that crime has spiraled out of control, pushing officers to their limits. Reports indicate that on the first day of this crackdown, law enforcement made 23 arrests for various offenses, including murder.
