National Guard soldier dies from noncombat injury in Iraq

One U.S. soldier has died from non-combat injuries in Iraq, the Pentagon said.

The Department of Defense announced that Capt. Eric Richard Hart, 34, of Indianapolis, died Saturday.

Mr. Hart was in Iraq supporting U.S. military operations against the designated terrorist organization ISIS. He was assigned to the 38th Infantry Division within the Indiana National Guard.

He died in a non-combat-related incident, which the Pentagon said is currently under active investigation.

The United States has about 2,500 troops in Iraq, but earlier this year the Pentagon announced plans to reduce that force by 2026.

About 900 more soldiers are stationed in neighboring Syria to fight ISIS, and about 1,000 more are temporarily stationed in the country.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, the United States has been frequently attacked by Iranian-backed groups in both Iraq and Syria.

American forces are also actively fighting ISIS in the region.
