Seattle Mariners Defeat Mets in Road Trip Challenge
SEATTLE — The Mets set out on a challenging road trip late Sunday, but after two games, things are looking rough. On Tuesday evening, they faced a tough combination of solid pitching, poor defense, and average offense, resulting in an 8-3 defeat to the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. This marks the start of their road trip with two consecutive losses.
Gone is the upbeat vibe they had when entering the Pacific Northwest, having just completed a four-game winning streak by sweeping the Marlins. Now, the Mariners—winners of eight straight games—pose a significant threat in the American League West, and the Mets are gearing up to face a competitive Padres team in San Diego.
Jonah Tong struggled in his first challenging outing since being called up from Triple-A Syracuse, pitching just 3 1/3 innings while allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. Despite the evening’s struggles, the Mets did manage to hit three home runs, but they were overshadowed by the Mariners taking a commanding lead by the fifth inning.
One bright spot for the Mets was rookie Carson Benge, who connected for two home runs, continuing his offensive surge. Though on this night, the Mets seemed to lack momentum after a tight 3-2 loss in extra innings the night before, where they only managed two hits.
Starter Huascar Brazoban’s outing ended early in the second inning after allowing a two-run homer to Patrick Wisdom after a prior single from Dominic Canzone. Tong stepped in to record the last out of the inning, but the damage was done.
Benge managed to tie the game at 2-2 in the third with a two-run homer. AJ Ewing also contributed with a double, but as the innings progressed, the defensive lapses became costly. Mistakes by the Mets’ defense allowed the Mariners to score an unearned run in the third, followed by another in the fourth that extended their lead to 4-2.
In a pivotal moment during the fifth, a three-run homer by Johnny Pereda solidified the Mariners’ advantage at 7-2 after a series of hits and a mix-up in the field. Tong faced challenges throughout, but Benge’s second homer brought the score to 7-3, marking a personal highlight for the rookie as his first multi-home run game.
Meanwhile, AJ Minter shined, throwing eight scoreless innings in back-to-back appearances since returning from rehab. The night before, he was the game-winner in the tenth inning, showcasing his valuable contribution to the team.
