Omaha Woman Shot by Police After Stabbing Attempt

A woman from Nebraska was shot and killed by police earlier this week after she allegedly stabbed her 3-year-old son. This incident unfolded just days after she had been arrested for reportedly attacking the child’s father with a knife and for breaking into a Catholic church nearby.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, when officers were called to a Walmart after receiving reports about a woman, armed with a “cleaver,” accompanied by a young child. Upon arrival, police discovered 31-year-old Noemi Guzman in the store’s parking lot, holding the weapon next to a shopping cart with the boy inside.

Authorities stated that despite multiple demands for her to drop the knife, Guzman did not comply and instead made a threatening move towards an officer, slashing him in the face. This prompted two officers to fire their weapons, fatally wounding her. The child was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Surveillance footage later released by the police depicted Guzman stealing the knife and then forcing the child’s guardian outside at knifepoint.

Notably, this wasn’t Guzman’s first run-in with the law. In 2024, she was arrested following an incident in which she allegedly stabbed her father and attempted to set their house ablaze, later barricading herself inside St. Francis Cabrini Church in Omaha.

During that earlier incident, reports indicated that she had doused her father with a flammable liquid, slashing him before she fled to the church, where a priest called 911 as she vandalized the premises. The priest took refuge in a room and ultimately managed to escape, though Guzman had barricaded herself inside and deployed bear spray at officers trying to intervene.

After being arrested back then, Guzman faced multiple felony charges but was released on her own recognizance while awaiting trial. Prior to these incidents, Guzman had also been convicted of third-degree assault back in 2018.

The Omaha Police Department has not yet provided a detailed comment on the latest incident.
