Netanyahu and the IDF Apologize After Shell Fragment Hits Gaza Church, Resulting in 3 Deaths

IDF Addresses Incident at Holy Family Church in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that they do not specifically target religious sites and take extensive measures to protect civilians. Shoshani shared this on X/Twitter, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring religious freedom for all faiths.

This comment followed an internal investigation into reports of injuries at the Holy Family Church in Gaza City. Preliminary findings suggest that fragments from shells used in military operations inadvertently struck the church, and the situation is still under examination.

The IDF insists that their strikes are aimed solely at military targets, and they express regret for any unintended harm to civilians or religious buildings.

In the United States, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt addressed the incident during a daily briefing. She relayed that President Donald Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about the matter, describing the president’s reaction as “not a positive response,” and labeling the attack on the church as “a mistake.”

Netanyahu later conveyed Israel’s regret through a press statement. He expressed sorrow over the incident, stating, “All innocent loss of life is a tragedy. We share the sadness of our families and our loyal people.” He also acknowledged the supportive words from Pope Leo and confirmed that Israel is conducting a thorough investigation while remaining dedicated to protecting civilians and sacred sites.

As military operations continue against Hamas in various regions, the IDF is reportedly moving cautiously within densely populated areas of Gaza City. The remaining 50 Israeli hostages, including 20 living individuals, are thought to be located there. The presence of Hamas among the civilian population complicates the situation, making incidents like Thursday’s possible during combat operations.
