Netanyahu states that Israel plans to assume control of Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Thursday that Israeli forces plan to take control of the conflict-ridden Gaza Strip, asserting that this move is essential for the country’s security.

In an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu emphasized that acquiring Gaza is aimed at “ensuring our security,” which involves eliminating Hamas and allowing the civilian population to transition to a governance system that doesn’t involve Hamas, who he claims is a threat to Israel.

He further clarified that the takeover is not intended to be a permanent situation; there might come a time when it could be handed over to an “Arab army.”

“We want to create a security line. Governing it isn’t our aim. Our goal is to transfer authority to Arab forces that can effectively manage it without posing a threat to us and can ensure a better life for the people in Gaza,” Netanyahu explained to host Bill Hemmer. “That’s simply not feasible with Hamas in charge.”

His comments preceded a meeting of the Israeli Security Cabinet scheduled for Thursday, where discussions regarding increased military operations are expected. Recently, Netanyahu faced some pushback from the Israeli military chief concerning the plans to occupy the devastated region.

International bodies, including the United Nations, have raised alarms about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza and have called for more assistance.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas flared up on October 7, 2023, leading to approximately 1,200 casualties and 250 abducted individuals.

Following the assault, the Israeli military launched operations, according to figures reported by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. It’s worth noting that these numbers do not differentiate between combatants and civilians.

Although both Israel and Hamas discussed potential conditions for a temporary ceasefire last month through mediators, the initiative has resulted in Israeli and U.S. officials placing blame on Hamas and criticizing the negotiating group.

Currently, Israel controls around three-quarters of the Gaza Strip.

In late July, former President Trump mentioned that the U.S. would assist Palestinian residents in Gaza by establishing “food centers.”

“We’re coordinating with the U.S. to provide food… ensuring there are no obstacles for the people,” Trump stated.
