Israel Attacks Iran Amid Rising Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that Israel has begun military strikes against Iran, vowing to continue until the perceived threat is eliminated.

The first strike involved multiple air force jets targeting various military sites in Iran, according to the Israeli Defense Force (IDF). In a more than seven-minute address, Netanyahu described the Iranian leadership as a “tyrant” that “seeks the destruction of Israel,” referencing concerns over Iran’s uranium production capabilities.

“Just a moment ago, Israel launched Operation Raisinglion, a targeted military action aimed at addressing the Iranian threat to our existence. This operation will last several days, as necessary,” Netanyahu stated, pointing out that Iran’s nuclear ambitions had escalated.

He claimed that Iran has enriched uranium sufficient for nine atomic bombs and is taking unprecedented steps to weaponize this uranium. “If not stopped, Iran could produce nuclear weapons very quickly—potentially within a year,” he noted.

According to the IDF, the strikes focused on Iran’s nuclear military targets, including the main enrichment facility in Natanz. Netanyahu asserted that Israel aimed to disrupt Iran’s nuclear weaponization program.

He also mentioned a recent terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, suggesting that Iran is orchestrating a broad plan to eliminate Israel. “I want to send a message to the brave people of Iran: Our struggle isn’t against you, but the brutal dictatorship that has oppressed you for decades. I believe liberation for you is near,” he expressed.

Netanyahu added that he hoped for a future friendship between the two nations, emphasizing that the Iranian regime’s hostility threatens not only Israel but America as well. “This is why for years, they’ve called for our destruction,” he said. “Today, Israel responds to those calls with action. We aim to make the world a safer place.”

Following the Israeli strikes, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the U.S. was not involved in these actions, reiterating the country’s commitment to protecting its troops in the region. “Israel has informed us that this action was necessary for self-defense,” he wrote, asserting that Iran should refrain from targeting American interests.

Prior to the strikes, former President Donald Trump had warned of a potential “massive conflict” in the Middle East revolving around Iran’s nuclear program, highlighting the precarious state of affairs in the region.
