Nets’ Tosan Evbuomwan making most of playing time with career night

SALT LAKE CITY — Tosan Ebbuomwan may not have much NBA experience, but he's definitely making the most of the playing time he's getting.

The Nets' new two-way player scored a career-high 22 points and remained in the game in the final seconds of Sunday's 112-111 overtime loss to Utah.

“It's great… always under control,” said coach Jordi Fernandes. “It's like a guy who's been there before, he's 23 years old. I'm very happy to meet him, keep working with him, keep growing him.” I'm doing my job. ”

The Englishman made contact in the final minutes of extra time, went to the line and hit the winning free throw. However, after allowing Utah's basket, the Nets had two seconds left before getting a good look, but they couldn't do it.

“Both our defensive and offensive plays didn't work as well as we wanted,” Fernandez said.

“I didn't make the shot. I fumbled it. I didn't make the shot,” said Ebbuomwane, who has been praised by his coaches and teammates for his composure.

Ben Simmons clocked 31 minutes and 38 seconds, but exceeded the playing time limit and was removed from the game in the middle of overtime.

“In that OT, I probably played more than I should have. But I wanted to win, and that's the competitive spirit in me. So I stayed in there as long as I could. … So I… I tried to fill that role and did the best I could,” Simmons said.

“We have to be responsible,” Fernandez said. “A lot of times, real competitors will always say, ‘I want to stay.’ We talked about other players as well, but you have to save them from themselves.

“Ben, if I asked him, I'm sure he would have liked to have played, but at the same time, we know where we started this summer. We know where we are now. We like the progress we've made and we're going to continue to do that. We're going to do what's best for him, his body and the team first.”

Simmons is almost certain to miss one of the next two.

Brooklyn has not yet been cleared to play both ends of back-to-back games, and is scheduled to play at the Trail Blazers on Tuesday and at the Clippers in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

D'Angelo Russell missed his fourth consecutive game after suffering a right shin contusion on Sunday.

Cam Johnson suffered a sprained right ankle with just seconds left in a Jan. 2 win at Milwaukee and missed his fifth straight game.
