New Revelations Surrounding UNRWA’s Role in Recent Tragedies
Yonatan Samerano, just 21, lost his life during the horrific events of October 7, an unimaginable tragedy that still echoes in the hearts of many. His body, tragically displayed on the ground, was reportedly pulled into a vehicle by two men who later transported him to Gaza. Thankfully, a courageous IDF effort managed to recover him, and he was ultimately laid to rest in Israel.
Those two men were identified as working for UNRWA, the United Nations relief organization operating in Gaza. Over the last couple of years, serious allegations have emerged regarding UNRWA’s actions on October 7. These troubling claims include evidence of staff members taking photos, recordings revealing teachers boasting about the abduction of Israeli women, and the discovery of tunnels and a significant cache of weapons located at multiple UNRWA facilities in the Gaza Strip.
Interestingly, the controversy surrounding UNRWA isn’t a recent development. On December 2, a screening of the documentary “Unraveling UNRWA” was held at the Meyerson JCC in Manhattan. This film reveals a troubling narrative about an organization that has long operated under the guise of humanitarian work. It uncovers how UNRWA has, in some cases, acted as a cover for Hamas, allowing antisemitism to seep into education and fostering a mindset that contributed to the violent attacks faced on October 7.
If there’s one lesson to absorb from October 7, it’s the crucial nature of education. What children learn—and who teaches them—can shape their perspectives for life. The influence of role models and elected officials can’t be underestimated.
Amid this disturbing backdrop, New York City’s new mayor, Zoran Mamdani, has made a rather unsettling choice. Just weeks before his election, he participated in a “5K for Gaza” event in Brooklyn, with proceeds funneled towards UNRWA.
This decision isn’t merely a political misstep; it raises significant moral concerns, potentially shaking the foundations of societal values. Supporting an agency with grave allegations of terrorist affiliations and educational extremism signals a worrisome disregard for the safety of the Jewish community, especially in light of the rising antisemitism since October 7.
“Unraveling UNRWA” continues to highlight how this institution not only faltered in addressing the Palestinian refugee situation but also fostered misconceptions about Israel, contributing to a cycle of conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. By endorsing such a cause, the newly elected mayor risks bringing this divisive conflict into the political arena of New York City, potentially placing ideology over the unity and well-being of its residents.
It’s often easier to stay silent, to turn away from the discord that can be seen in public spaces. But such passivity carries a cost—to individuals, to families, and to society at large. When evil is ignored, it only grows bolder. If we choose silence, the consequences will reverberate, affecting not just the current generation, but also the children who will inherit this world.
