New Jersey high school encourages socialist club with flyer featuring Karl Marx

A flyer acquired reveals that a high school in an affluent suburb of New Jersey is promoting a new club for young socialists. The Highland Park High School Socialist Club recently held its inaugural meeting during lunchtime, according to the flyer. Students interested in anti-capitalism are getting guidance from Mr. Garvan.

The flyer features the catchy phrase, “We want you,” along with an image of Karl Marx, echoing the familiar “I Want You” poster from World War I featuring Uncle Sam.

“Learn how to solve social problems without exploiting the working class,” the flyer states.

Other slogans on the promotional material include variations like “Learn what socialism is, not just what it says,” “Acquire media and literacy skills,” and “Help build a better world!” It even concludes with the rallying cry, “Workers of the world, unite!” which is a well-known socialist phrase.

Situated southwest of New York City, Highland Park boasts a median household income exceeding $100,000, which is notably higher than the national average of $83,730.

Recent data from the Cato Institute indicates that a growing number of young people support socialism. While minors weren’t included in the survey, it showed that 62% of individuals aged 18 to 29 have a favorable view of socialism. Interestingly, about 14% expressed support for full communism, based on a sample of 2,000 respondents.

Recently, Zoran Mamdani, a self-identified socialist, was elected as the new mayor of New York. Reports indicate that around three-quarters of New Yorkers under 30 who voted in the recent elections chose him.

In light of inquiries, Christina Saska, the superintendent of Highland Park School District, provided a brief comment: “All high school clubs are subject to the Equal Access Act, which mandates school districts to permit extracurricular clubs regardless of their political nature.”
