New Orleans winter storm covers Louisiana city in snow, southerners play ice hockey on frozen streets

It's the Big Freeze.

New Orleans residents are making the most of a rare snowstorm and frigid temperatures Tuesday that turned the streets of the French Quarter into an ice hockey rink.

Video posted to social media Fox 8 reporter Olivia Vidal shows a man walking down an icy Canal Street in the Crescent City with skates, a hockey stick and a puck.

One of the busiest blocks in all of New Orleans, Canal Street is dead quiet, empty except for single skaters and videographers capturing the rare sight.

The storm has been hailed by meteorologists as a once-in-a-generation event.

More snow is expected to fall along the Southeast coast overnight into Wednesday, with more freezing conditions expected to add to the headaches and joys of southerners unaccustomed to snow.
