New York children die after falling through ice at Albany Washington Park Lake

Officials said Tuesday that an 11-year-old girl also died over the weekend after falling through the ice while trying to save a 12-year-old boy who had jumped in ahead of her.

The two children were at Washington Park Lake in Albany around 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the boy tried to walk across the frozen lake and fell through the ice, according to an Albany Police Department news release. .

Police said the girl ran after the boy to try to help him, but the girl also fell.

Albany police officers and firefighters responded and rescued the girl, who was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital in critical condition.

On Tuesday, police said the girl died from her injuries.

A New York State Police dive team discovered the boy's body Saturday around 7:30 p.m., police said.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said it was surprising the kids made it this far considering how thin the ice was.

“This is a reminder of how fragile life is, and we want our children, and everyone in our community, to know that going out on the ice in any body of water is not a safe practice. It's a reminder of how important “here” is. Sheehan told television station WNYT.
