Be careful—those cameras are everywhere!
On Friday, the city’s health department issued a warning about being caught on camera while illegally discarding trash. This warning comes with a playful reference to the recent scandal involving a tech executive and the “kiss cam” at a Coldplay concert.
“Cameras are everywhere! Don’t let yourself be caught in the act of doing something you really shouldn’t,” the Sanitation Department remarked in a post.
They added an image from the concert featuring CEO Andy Byron with HR head Christine Cabot, which was shared widely after their moment of affection was captured on the Jumbotron.
The post humorously juxtaposed images of individuals caught on surveillance while illegally dumping garbage, highlighting the consequences of such actions.
In a bid to reach those contemplating littering, the department cautioned, “If you’re thinking about tossing something illegal, bear in mind there are cameras everywhere. We’ll catch you, and you’ll face the penalties!”
One observer reacted with a comment, expressing outrage, “It’s a crime, and DSNY is on the case!”
Belinda McGar, a spokesperson for the Sanitation Department, emphasized that it’s illegal to dispose of waste in public areas like streets, parking lots, or parks.
“If you think about treating our city like a landfill, remember that we have a network of about 300 cameras monitoring the hotspots,” she noted.
Last year alone, the city issued around 300 summonses for illegal dumping, with the Sanitation Department regularly showcasing images of offenders on social media.
Meanwhile, Byron and Cabot were seen attempting to conceal their identities during the kiss cam moment at the concert. The lead singer, Chris Martin, even remarked on their apparent hesitation, saying, “Are they shy or is something else going on here?”
The situation has prompted the company to announce that they will provide more insights soon about an internal issue being investigated by the board.
