Democratic New York Governor Cathy Hochul is proposing to allocate $2.4 billion to address New York City's immigration crisis, even as she calls for aid cuts to some schools.
Hochul is unveiled budget proposal A total of $233 billion was paid to the state Legislature in Albany on Tuesday.
“New York continues to carry the burden of sheltering more than 69,000 immigrants,” Hochul said. “We must support the Mayor of New York in this moment.”
The plan includes $1 billion to reimburse cities for costs related to the immigration crisis, $500 million to help pay for services such as health care and safety for immigrants, and $500 million to pay for immigrant shelters. Includes $400 million.

However, overall school spending is expected to increase by 2.4% to $35.3 billion.
Hochul said she would also be heading to Washington, D.C., to press the federal government to do more to address the immigration crisis. Polls show that Democratic voters blame left-wing politicians for the negative effects of immigration.
The final budget must be approved by Congress and completed by April.
Hochul had previously been at loggerheads with New York's mayor, who complained that the state was not doing enough to support the city's efforts to combat immigration. Hochul countered that the city is better equipped to deal with immigrants than other rural areas in the state.
Mayor Adams on Tuesday approved a plan to implement a curfew at immigrant shelters to address complaints from residents.
