California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his irritation with social media on Saturday as President Donald Trump mobilized 2,000 National Guard troops in response to anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.
Trump deployed the National Guard following two days of unrest. Reports indicated that masked extremists had clashed with federal law enforcement who were apprehending undocumented immigrants in the area.
The crowd engaged in acts of vandalism, setting a car on fire, spray-painting federal buildings, and confronting law enforcement personnel.
Local and state officials seemed to struggle to address the violence, primarily focusing on supporting immigrants and critiquing the Trump administration’s policies.
Newsom’s anger intensified when the administration proposed the potential deployment of Marines as well.
“First Partner” Jennifer Sebel Newsom has also expressed her concerns, and the governor shared her comments.
In 2020, Newsom took a hands-off approach while protests linked to the Black Lives Matter movement led to significant upheaval in the city.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security released footage documenting the violent protests.
“The blatant targeting of law enforcement in Los Angeles by demonstrators is reprehensible. These individuals work daily to safeguard American lives.”
Additional video showed protesters accusing police of cooperating with ICE agents.
Other clips highlighted large groups of protesters marching through the streets.
Update: President Trump shared a post late at night supporting the National Guard’s actions.
