Scott Bessent Critiques Gavin Newsom at World Economic Forum

During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent launched a pointed critique against California Governor Gavin Newsom, labeling him as a “smug man” and likening him to a mix of “Patrick Bateman and Sparkle Beach Ken.” This remark certainly caught attention.

On Wednesday, Bessent didn’t hold back, branding Newsom as “economically illiterate.” He expressed disbelief that the governor wasn’t addressing his own policies, which he argues have led to significant issues in California, such as a budget deficit, a large homeless population, and residents who suffered from wildfires.

“I was told he was asked to give a speech on his signature policies, but he’s not speaking because, frankly, what have his economic policies produced? We’re seeing people leave California, a massive budget deficit, and the largest homeless population in the U.S.,” Bessent stated. “Meanwhile, he’s at Davos mingling with the elite while Californians struggle with homelessness. It’s shameful.”

Bessent accused Newsom of focusing on luxury gatherings instead of addressing urgent problems in his state. He suggested that the governor might be less knowledgeable about economics than Kamala Harris, a former Democratic presidential candidate.

“He may very well be the only Californian less informed about economics than Kamala Harris. Here he is with his billionaire ally, Alex Soros, enjoying Davos while Californians were left to face lockdowns and turmoil. Remember how he dined on lavish meals at the French Laundry?” Bessent remarked.
