Newspaper faces criticism for cartoon making fun of MAGA victims of Texas floods: 'Distorted, offensive, and disgraceful'

Controversy Over Satirical Cartoon Following Texas Flood

Recently, Buffalo News published a political cartoon that mocked right-wing individuals in Texas affected by a devastating flood, stirring significant backlash on social media.

The cartoon depicts a man in a flood, seemingly desperate for help, while a conservative slogan looms in the background stating, “The government is not a solution, it’s a problem.”

“Why would you publish such offensive and despicable comics? Your artist should be fired.”

Created by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Adam Gigris, the piece appears to critique conservatives who, in a moment of crisis, turn to the federal government for assistance, highlighting a perceived hypocrisy.

Michael Cracker, the chairman of the Erie County Republican Committee, was among those who expressed outrage. He remarked, “I ran a comic about a Texas family who suffered a tragedy simply because they may have voted Republican. This is mean-spirited and shameful. A public apology is due to those affected.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, expressing disbelief that political motives would overshadow compassion in times of disaster. Former New York State Representative Chris Jacobs commented, “While our country has always had its political divides, we typically set those aside during times of great tragedy. This cartoon runs counter to that understanding.”

“Anyone who approves of this is, frankly, mentally unwell. They seem to be lost in their thoughts,” another user remarked on social media.

One critic questioned not just the artist’s intent but also the editorial oversight, stating, “I really don’t want to believe this was only the cartoonist’s doing; the editor must have approved it, and no one stepped in to prevent its publication.”

Another user added, “Why do you continue to publish these offensive cartoons? Lives are at stake. Have some respect for those suffering.”

Currently, the death toll from the floods in Texas has exceeded 100, with rescue efforts still underway. Individuals looking to assist flood victims can seek out donation and volunteer opportunities locally.

Buffalo News has not made any comments regarding the backlash or the cartoon as of yet.

In related news, previously, Scott Adams, creator of the “Dilbert” comic, mentioned that his series faced cancellation due to controversial comments about race.
