Nick Faldo Critiques Bryson DeChambeau’s Strategy Ahead of British Open

Nick Faldo is still a force in the golfing world, even at 68 years old. Recently, he didn’t hold back while discussing Bryson DeChambeau’s play style, especially as both golfers prepared for the British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Faldo, a six-time major champion and inductee into the World Golf Hall of Fame, expressed his disappointment with DeChambeau’s apparent lack of strategy on the course. “Why can’t they utilize their skills properly even as LIV superstars?” he remarked. “Let’s face it; he really has no grasp of strategy,” Faldo added, pointing to what he believes is a fundamental misunderstanding in DeChambeau’s approach.

Looking back at DeChambeau’s past comments, Faldo referenced a declaration from last year where DeChambeau claimed he would “attack the rink.” Faldo countered, saying he has always believed in a more methodical approach. “You need to thread the needle, not just bomb it without knowing where it will land,” he explained. “It’s about intelligent shot placement, not just sheer power.”

The three-time British Open champion also touched on the consequences of DeChambeau’s current style, warning that even a well-placed shot could still miss the fairway due to unforeseen conditions like hitting a divot. “He’s got to learn how to consistently find the short grass,” he stated. “He keeps trying to overpower the course—it’s just not smart.”

DeChambeau has had a rocky start to his major season, missing out on prestigious tournaments like the Masters and the U.S. Open. Last year, he finished in the top ten and managed to qualify for this year’s British Open, but he certainly has his work cut out for him.

In order to silence critics like Faldo, DeChambeau will need to make a strong impression in the early rounds of the British Open. There’s also the pressure of wanting to live up to expectations, especially with a rumored $500 million contract looming as his current deal with LIV Golf comes to an end.
