Nick Jonas Flees Stage in Prague

While performing with his brothers in Prague, Nick Jonas unexpectedly dashed off stage after being struck by a laser beam.

In a recent discussion, Nick opened up about how his faith was challenged after experiencing what he felt was a “betrayal” by his longtime church and losing his family’s home during his early rise to fame.

Back in the early 2000s, when Nick, Kevin, and Joe began their music careers, their father, Kevin Jonas Sr., served as the senior pastor at Wyckoff Assembly of God Church in New Jersey. Just after the Jonas Brothers formed and signed with Columbia Records in 2005, Kevin Sr. was compelled to resign. As a result, the family had to leave their church-owned residence.

On the Jay Shetty Podcast, Nick shared his reflections on that significant transition and its impact on his faith and personal life.

“Our father was part of that church for ten years,” he recounted. “It was a safety net for us, a place where we felt we belonged.” He noted that certain families within the congregation opposed his father and actively sought to oust him, which led to their departure.

“We lost our home since we lived in church property,” he added. “Eventually, we moved into a modest house in Little Falls, New Jersey, where the owner graciously allowed us to stay for next to nothing during that tough time.”

At the same time, the Jonas Brothers were on a small high school tour in New Jersey to promote their music. Nick mentioned struggling with health issues during this period and later being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He recalled, “We’d show up early to rallies with all our gear. That’s when I started noticing symptoms—like losing weight and always feeling thirsty. I thought it was just puberty or something, but it turned out to be diabetes.”

Additionally, financial stress weighed heavily on the family. Despite the release of their debut album, “It’s About Time,” in 2006, Columbia Records decided not to renew their contract due to disappointing sales. “After the first album, we found ourselves deeply in debt—credit card bills piling up. It’s tough in ministry; there’s rarely any money,” he remarked.

Nick recognized that he began to doubt his faith amid these personal and professional pressures. “Everything seemed overwhelming, and I questioned my relationship with God after feeling abandoned by the church during such a difficult phase,” he shared.

Fortunately, things began to shift for the Jonas Brothers in 2007 when they signed with a major label, Hollywood Records, part of the Disney umbrella. “They reached out, and soon after, we were featured on the Disney Channel, which really helped us gain traction,” he said.

Reflecting on his journey, Nick acknowledged that while he struggled with aspects of organized religion, his belief in God remained steadfast. He believes these challenges ultimately contributed to his personal growth. “I’ve really examined my faith and how it relates to organized religion. I feel confident saying that my relationship with God is intact, and I think exploring these questions is vital for everyone.”
