Noah Kahan Objects to Trump’s Use of His Song

Folk-pop artist Noah Kahan and his co-writer, Noah Levine, have urged the White House to cease using their song “American Cars.” This call to action came after President Trump shared a social media video featuring the track while touring a General Motors testing site in Michigan.

The video’s soundtrack caught the attention of many online users, prompting them to tag Kahan, who responded directly in the comments. In a post, Kahan stated he “will never accept” his music being employed to back the administration. Levine also chimed in, using strong language to express his disapproval.

This isn’t an isolated incident; other musicians have previously voiced similar objections. For instance, Sabrina Carpenter openly criticized the use of her song “Juno” in a government-related video last year, labeling the post “evil and disgusting.”

Kahan is not often involved in the political arena, generally preferring to focus on mental health advocacy. He founded the Busyhead Project, which aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and provide better access to resources. Interestingly, Vermont’s Governor recently declared September 19th as “Noah Kahan’s Busyhead Project Day” in recognition of his efforts.

The White House has faced backlash from various artists, including Olivia Rodrigo, who reacted strongly to similar incidents where her music was used in politically sensitive contexts. Recently, Katy Perry also criticized the administration for using her song “Firework” in a military clip, emphasizing her disapproval.

The dialogue about artists’ rights and the appropriation of their work continues, highlighting the complex relationship between art and politics.

Efforts to reach comments from Kahan, Levine, and the White House on this matter were not immediately successful.
