A fight erupted in a New Orleans courtroom Thursday after a man pleaded guilty to killing three children in a house fire last year.
New Orleans news outlets reported that Joseph Washington has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the attack on a woman related to his children.

Other relatives joined in the attack before deputies could restore order. One arrest was reported.

Washington’s plea came after prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty in the case. That means Washington will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Washington state set fire to his ex-wife’s house in October, which Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described as a “horrific” act of domestic violence. According to police, a 3-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl, and an 8-year-old boy died in the fire.

According to police, the children’s mother reported that their father was planning to set the house on fire. Her mother said she wasn’t home at the time. A short time later, a fire was reported.
