Neighbors Frustrated as Los Angeles “Trash House” Returns to Filthy State
The notorious property in Los Angeles, often referred to as the “trash house,” is back to its old, unsightly ways, much to the dismay of nearby residents.
Located in the Fairfax District, this home has repeatedly drawn attention due to its accumulation of rubbish. Just two years after a significant cleanup where city workers removed tons of waste, the property is now once again overrun with debris.
New video footage shows the home on North Martel Avenue engulfed in junk, with trash overflowing onto adjacent areas.
This unwelcome turn of events has reignited anger among locals who have seen the property become a blight on their community for the third time in recent years. As a result, health officials from the county are ramping up efforts to look into the situation.
According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, their Environmental Health division is planning to visit the property to check for sanitation violations, assess the garbage buildup, and investigate any potential rodent issues.
Reports suggest that bugs have been spotted swarming around the trash-laden house.
It’s worth noting that the department hasn’t inspected the property since the extensive cleanup operation in 2025 and hadn’t received complaints until this latest discovery came to light.
The findings from this inspection will be forwarded to both the county Department of Mental Health and the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to discuss possible actions moving forward.
For neighbors living on an otherwise desirable street, this ongoing situation has become a continuous headache. The property, surrounded by high-end homes, has turned into a stark contrast against the multimillion-dollar residences nearby.
The circumstances became so intolerable in 2024 that Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass personally visited the location after residents voiced their concerns regarding the mounting garbage.
City crews came in and cleared away around seven tons of waste, but that clean slate didn’t last long.
By September 2025, the trash had made a comeback, leading to yet another round of complaints from frustrated residents and officials alike.
“It’s pretty gross and it smells pretty bad,” remarked neighbor Jay Carey, recalling the foul state of affairs. “It just keeps happening, and, you know, they cleaned it out what, like a year ago?”
In light of the ongoing issues, the mayor’s office criticized the property owners for neglecting to maintain the property, especially considering the resources already spent by the city to tackle this health hazard.
It should also be noted that last year, officials confirmed that there is an open criminal case against the owner of the property.
City Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky’s office has referred to the situation as “completely unacceptable,” highlighting concerns over the city’s slow response in enforcement.
Interestingly, a woman claiming to be a friend of the homeowner previously expressed a different viewpoint, suggesting he was merely collecting recyclables rather than hoarding trash. She also noted that he’s a Vietnam War veteran dealing with PTSD.
However, social media reactions were largely unsympathetic following the release of the recent footage.
“This should be grounds for losing your house especially if it’s a repeat issue,” one commenter stated emphatically.
Another pointed out that simply clearing away the trash wouldn’t address the root cause of the problem.
“You cannot fix the problem by cleaning it up, it’s a mental illness. They should have offered mandatory therapy,” the comment read.
Some community members expressed concerns about potential health risks that could extend beyond the property itself.
“I guess no one in that street is powerful enough to do something about it. With all those rodents, how are other homes safe?” another questioned.
For local residents, the pressing concern remains whether city officials will finally put an end to this ongoing garbage saga or if they’ll have to endure yet another buildup of trash.
