Nurse in Michigan Taken Into Custody Following Discovery of 73 Deceased Cats at Residence

Michigan Nurse Charged with Animal Cruelty After Over 100 Cats Found

A nurse in Michigan has been charged with animal cruelty as authorities discovered more than 100 cats at her residence, 73 of which were deceased.

Emily Karolski, 41, faces charges related to cruelty towards more than 25 animals and improper burial. She reportedly claimed to be a nurse caring for newborns and resides in Dryden Township, to the north of Detroit.

The situation came to light when a package delivery driver reported a strong, unpleasant odor emanating from her home. The driver noted he could detect the smell from 40 feet away, even suggesting it seemed like something had died inside. In response, local police conducted a welfare check, peering through a window to find around 12 dead cats on the kitchen counter. Since she was not present at the home, firefighters had to assist in gaining entry.

Upon entering, first responders were overwhelmed by the stench, causing them dizziness and headaches, leading to a temporary evacuation. They later returned equipped with ventilators.

Animal control officials reported rescuing 28 living cats from the house, while removing the remains of 73 others. Among the surviving cats, three were found to have feline leukemia, which is both terminal and highly contagious. Many of the remaining cats are suffering from respiratory issues and are being relocated to rescue centers across Michigan.

Before her arraignment, County Prosecutor John D. Miller noted there was no basis for recommending mental health treatment for Karolski. He stated, “She was aware of the situation and recognized its tragedy.”

Karolski’s bail has been set at $2,500, with her next court hearing scheduled for July 17. She could face a maximum of seven years in prison, along with a $10,000 fine and at least five years of probation due to the felony animal cruelty charge.
