More than 233,000 immigrants are currently living in New York City following the Biden administration's immigration crisis.
The city has spent more than $5 billion on essential services for immigrants, including housing, food, health care, public services and supplies, and administrative costs.
At least 58,000 immigrants currently live in taxpayer-funded city-run shelters, but ICE does not say how many criminals live in subsidized shelters.
“We need additional resources,” Gennaro continued in the interview. new york post. “The fact is, I have to focus all of my resources on the worst, worst, most egregious violations. All I can say is that we have prospects that we work on every day. But it's not just hundreds.”
Gennaro's comments came after President-elect Donald Trump won a victory by announcing that “on day one, we would begin the largest criminal deportation program in American history.” It is currently unclear what kind of impact this will have on the city. A sanctuary policy is in place.
Henaro added that he was very “frustrated” with the city's sanctuary laws, arguing that “the only people they protect are criminals, and they protect criminals from us.”
According to ICE statistics, as of July 21centThere are 662,586 immigrants who have been convicted of a felony or currently have criminal charges pending.
“The majority of crimes committed today are against the most vulnerable people in our communities: immigrant women and immigrant children, who are the people that sanctuary policies are helping or supporting.” I don't understand how you can believe that,” Henaro said.
Additionally, Gennaro spoke about the position of Mayor Eric Adams, who has criticized the Biden administration's handling of the immigration crisis, previously saying the influx of immigrants “will destroy New York City.”
Adams also expressed support for relaxing the city's sanctuary law, which would allow immigrants suspected of “serious” crimes to be turned over to ICE agents.
“The mayor knows we need to work together,” Henaro added. “He understands what's going on in New York City and wants help from the federal government.”
Additionally, President Trump's newly appointed “border czar” Tom Homan recently said that federal agents will pursue immigrant criminals regardless of their city or state sanctuary status.
“They don't need to help us, but they need to get out of the way because we're coming right away, and we're going to do it. I mean, if I go to that sanctuary city twice If I have to send twice as many resources, twice as many agents, that's exactly what I'm going to do,” Homan said.
“And I've been saying for the last few days that they need to study law,” he added. “They can't help, but they don't get in our way and they don't cross certain lines.”
