NYC Mayor Mamdani describes his connection with Trump as ‘honest’ and ‘direct’

How ‘affordability’ changed the old rules and impacted the 2025 elections

Mamdani Discusses Relationship with Trump Amid Criticism

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani has characterized his relationship with President Donald Trump as “honest and candid,” even in light of Trump’s recent criticisms. In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Mamdani stated, “I think it’s honest, direct and productive.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication, focusing on their mutual commitment to New York City.

When asked about whether he could “trust” Trump, Mamdani acknowledged that the dialogue needs to keep going. However, he praised the president for his role in securing the release of a Columbia University student detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Interestingly, Mamdani expressed some concern about whether his socialist platform would resonate beyond New York City. He reflected on how honesty involves recognizing their differences. Mentioning their discussions, he noted, “When I told him that, he acknowledged my viewpoint on the inhumanity of ICE raids.”

These remarks followed a period of tension, notably after Trump criticized Mamdani for proposing a tax on New York City properties valued over $5 million.

While Trump described Mamdani’s efforts as potentially detrimental to the city, saying, “Sadly, Mayor Mamdani is trying to destroy New York,” he also noted that it’s essential to change tax policies. This reflects the ongoing debate around Mamdani’s plans in contrast to Trump’s views.

Interestingly, despite their differing political stances, Mamdani and Trump have met several times since Mamdani’s election. They occasionally communicate via calls and emails, which seems to surprise some commentators.

Trump has remarked in the past about their shared interests, celebrating Mamdani’s victory against strong opponents and recognizing their collaborative efforts toward addressing issues like housing and food prices. It’s somewhat intriguing how, despite their political differences, they find common ground on pressing urban challenges.
