The New York City school boss has stopped the release of massive communications sent to educators, students and parents, sparked by rage over a recent education newsletter claiming Israel is committing “Gaza genocide.”
The post first reported on Wednesday about the anti-Semitism message that was included in the 14-page Teacher Career Pathway on the Spring 2025 newsletter. This was sent to “teachers masters” at 1,800 schools in the system.
School Prime Minister Melissa Aviles Ramos said following consultations with Mayor Eric Adams' office that she could not release newsletters or other large-scale communications without first reviewing her office.
“It is a terrible disappointment that despite efforts to streamline communication protocols in this large system, politically one-sided material has once again been shared with educators that are deeply offensive to the Jewish community,” Aviles Ramos said Thursday.
“I apologize a lot for this. As we move forward, all system-wide communication will be registered directly by my office until we can build more team capabilities to reflect our best commitment to curating only those core values and political neutrality.”
Considering running for reelection under the independent “endantisemitism” voting line, Adams was furious after hearing a message strolling around Israel sent from his education department.
Meanwhile, the DOE directive sent to educators on Thursday was even more clear.
“Please enable it immediately and pause all newsletters and mass communications from your team and department until further notice,” said a memo sent by the DOE supervisor obtained by the Post.
“This applies to any message that goes to staff, family-friendly or citywide, regardless of audience or platform,” the memo says.
