Philanthropist Donates to Super PAC Backing Mamdani

The heir to a billionaire hedge fund manager has made a notable contribution to a super PAC supporting socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani, who has publicly questioned the existence of billionaires. This donation is reportedly one of the largest received during this election cycle, amounting to $250,000 from philanthropist Elizabeth Simons.

Elizabeth Simons, daughter of Jamie Simons—who founded the successful hedge fund Renaissance Technologies—brings a personal fortune of about $31.4 billion, often directing her wealth towards charitable endeavors.

Mamdani expressed his thoughts on wealth distribution, stating, “I don’t think we should have a billionaire because it’s so much money in such moments of inequality. What we need more is equality in our cities, states, and the nation.” He shared these sentiments with NBC News earlier this year.

His campaign has garnered significant attention, with a notable advisory circle that includes activist voices who are often categorized as radical, including some with anti-Israel sentiments.

This situation has sparked discussions on social media, generating criticism especially from his opponent, former New York governor Andrew Cuomo. He commented on the irony of Mamdani’s position, labeling it as “the Holy Trinity of Hypocrisy,” citing the disparity between advocating for affordable housing and accepting a billionaire’s support.

Attempts to get responses from both Mamdani’s campaign and the PAC about whether the donation would be rejected or condemned have not yielded any answers.

The theme of opposing billionaires has been a consistent part of Mamdani’s campaign dialogue as he strives to represent the working-class citizens of New York City. “We’re reaching a New Yorker who’s been ignored by founding politicians and crushed by a billionaire class,” he mentioned in a Twitter post. He believes that grassroots efforts will be crucial in gaining momentum as the election approaches.

The campaign has also seen Mamdani criticize Cuomo for his connections with wealthy backers, arguing that the billionaire influence has made New York one of the most expensive cities to live in. “But we have an agenda to make life affordable,” he concluded.
