Police Stop ATV and Dirt Bike Hijacking on Bay Bridge
Authorities arrested nine individuals and seized 77 ATVs and dirt bikes in response to a violent hijacking that disrupted traffic on California’s Bay Bridge, according to police reports.
During a press conference, Oakland police detailed their operation, which involved setting up a blockade to manage the situation on Sunday. Officers reported how they used drone technology to monitor bikers as they swerved through lanes, blocked by police vehicles. In one dramatic moment, footage captured an officer attempting to rescue a person who leaped into the water to escape the scene.
Oakland Police Chief James Beal mentioned that this coordinated effort by over 100 officers helped to effectively trap the bikers on the bridge. He noted this isn’t the first instance of such incidents in the city; illegal takeovers have been a recurring problem.
In fact, just last month, the San Francisco Police, collaborating with the California Highway Patrol, seized 85 motorcycles during an attempt to hijack the same bridge. Notably, the previous year also saw more than 140 vehicles seized due to similar events.
Beal cautioned that further arrests are anticipated, indicating, “If you thought you got away, you might want to reconsider.” His statement suggests an ongoing commitment to addressing this growing concern in the community.
