Officer rescues 6-year-old child from drowning in Florida pool

ICE Officer Gregory Simmons Details Daring Rescue of Drowning Child

ICE Officer Gregory Simmons recently shared the intense experience of saving a six-year-old from drowning in a swimming pool located in Pasco County, Florida. His immediate action and use of CPR were crucial in reviving the unconscious child, showcasing the exceptional efforts of law enforcement beyond their standard duties.

While attending a year-end soccer celebration for his son, Simmons noticed a lifeguard signaling distress in the water. Once he called attention to the situation, he quickly realized a child was in trouble. “Something just clicked,” Simmons explained. “I jumped in and swam as fast as I could. The moment I pulled him up, I knew he needed CPR, and I just went into action.” It’s a little surreal, honestly. You don’t often imagine yourself in such a crucial moment.

After reflecting on the event, Simmons expressed his relief, saying, “I was in the right place at the right time. It really is amazing that this kid got a second chance at life.” His actions did not go unnoticed; the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) praised him publicly for his quick thinking and bravery, noting that the child is expected to recover fully.

The DHS shared surveillance footage of the rescue, highlighting Simmons diving into the pool and administering CPR. This rescue coincided with recent negativity surrounding ICE, emphasizing that officers often put their lives at risk to aid others, not just enforce laws. Lauren Biss, Acting Assistant Secretary of DHS, commended Simmons, stating, “He acted immediately and provided essential medical care to the child.” It makes you ponder the narrative people often hear about ICE. Maybe it’s time for a shift in perspective.

Simmons reiterated the mission of his department, saying, “We’re here to protect our community. There are always various threats to national security and public safety, and it’s our job to address them.” It’s tough, sometimes, when you’re doing your best and not everyone sees it that way.
