Immigration Issue Overlooked in Burnham’s First Speech
The immigration crisis in Britain risks being ignored by the new left-leaning Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, who notably didn’t address the issue during his first address after taking office.
Burnham, stepping into Downing Street on Monday, delivered a broad but somewhat vague speech detailing his governing priorities. However, critical topics, particularly immigration, were conspicuously absent.
In his address, Burnham mentioned several issues such as state control over industries, homelessness, youth mental health support, and welfare spending. Yet, immigration, which consistently ranks among the top policy concerns for the public, was not included.
According to a YouGov survey, immigration has been recognized as one of the most pressing issues by the public over the past year and has consistently ranked within the top three concerns for the past 15 years. It’s expected that border control will play a significant role in upcoming elections and public votes.
Burnham has previously stated he wouldn’t attempt to reform Nigel Farage’s British Reform Party to regain working-class votes. Still, there’s a noticeable shift in the Labor Party’s stance towards certain policies, such as nationalizing key industries. Interestingly, immigration policy remains a clear exception where discrepancies might be emerging.
Commenting on the absence of immigration in Burnham’s speech, Reform UK representative Zia Yusuf criticized the Prime Minister for favoring his party’s far-left members over addressing the concerns of the general public. “Immigration is seen by numerous polling organizations as the foremost issue for British voters, yet Andy Burnham failed to mention it during his introductory speech,” he remarked.
The ongoing migrant crisis, especially those crossing the English Channel, has also been a point of contention. The flow of illegal migrants into England has reportedly surged under the former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s leadership, surpassing that of any previous administration.
In terms of societal impact, both legal and illegal immigration are significantly altering the demographics of Britain. Reports indicated that competitive migration is projected to account for 98% of the population growth by 2025. Moreover, the number of white Britons is falling, with their population decreasing since the 1980s, in spite of an overall population increase.
