Orlando police discover huge amount of drugs at airport following strange effort to conceal evidence

This summer, over 200 pounds of marijuana made its way onto flights from Los Angeles to Orlando International Airport, only to be intercepted by police in two separate operations.

Authorities reported that the smugglers tried to transport large quantities of marijuana from Los Angeles International Airport to Central Florida, according to police documents recently released.

The illicit drugs were caught by undercover officers from the Orlando Police Department and specially trained drug-sniffing dogs.

Investigators noted that the suspects employed superglue and discarded luggage tags in an effort to mislead authorities, using dryer sheets to mask the marijuana smell.

In one raid on May 7, police seized 57.6 pounds of marijuana, neatly packed in 50 vacuum-sealed bags, wrapped in blankets, and filled with dryer sheets.

Another operation, which took place on July 1, resulted in the confiscation of 144.4 pounds of marijuana hidden in suitcases that were completely glued shut.

The suspects, identified as individuals in their twenties, are facing felony drug trafficking charges, according to reports.

Keith Jeffries, a vice president at K2 Security Screening Group, noted that various methods exist for smuggling drugs on commercial flights. He mentioned that airport or airline employees could potentially be involved in such operations, or traffickers may use drug mules, although it’s unclear how these particular drugs got on the flights.

Jeffries mentioned that there could have been a tip from a confidential informant alerting law enforcement about specific bags or individuals.

“At this point, we can only speculate without further information from law enforcement,” he commented.

Having served as the TSA’s federal security director at LAX and deputy federal security director at MCO, Jeffries added that drug trafficking can occur on any domestic route, and it often does.

He pointed out that Orlando, being a major tourist hub, could be particularly appealing for traffickers. “In this scenario, they might assume that security is less stringent, but that’s not accurate,” he stated.

Interestingly, TSA officers are not specifically looking for illegal narcotics. When a suspicious substance is found during screenings, those cases are forwarded to law enforcement for further investigation.

“The TSA’s scope for administrative searches is quite limited,” Jeffries noted. “They don’t actively seek out drugs. Instead, they refer any unknown substances to law enforcement for identification.”

In light of the marijuana busts, Fox News Digital reached out to the Orlando Police Department for more details.

While local law enforcement dealt with the recent marijuana trafficking case in Orlando, TSA agents have uncovered other unexpected items during screenings. For instance, in early September, TSA officers at Dallas Love Field Airport found a concealed pocketknife hidden inside a tube of toothpaste. Similarly, in Tampa, a TSA team discovered a double-edged knife tucked inside a flashlight designed to look like a baseball bat in a passenger’s bag.
