Parents furious in California school district planned a strike After discovering that an LGBTQ+ club at their primary school had been set up without their input.
Controversy erupted at Pleasant Grove Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified District after parents said a third-grade teacher started a lunch group.
This group was called “UBU”, short for “You Be You”, and was also known as the Rainbow Club.
“These little minds have no idea what this means to them,” Pamela Davila, a parent of a student at the elementary school, told KOVR-TV.
“I don’t think any of us have a problem with that topic,” she added. “I just did it without telling my parents.”
Unified Elk Grove parent Brittani Cortina also opposed the club.
“Deal with bullying. Don’t keep secrets from your parents,” Cortina says. “Don’t just think about that problem for students at school, but think about it for parents as well.”
Parents who protested said they didn’t necessarily have a problem with LGBTQ+ clubs in older grades, but were angry that clubs were being held in elementary schools without notice.
Dean Broyles, director of the National Law and Policy Center, worked with parents to send a cancellation letter to the school through the club.
“The question is whether parents have a fundamental right to raise, educate and train their children, or whether the state has the right to replace them,” Broyles said.
“If you want to have a club like this, it should be after school and with the full understanding and consent of parents,” he added.
The school has suspended club activities while it investigates the matter.
Others defended elementary school LGBTQ clubs, saying they were helpful for students who didn’t have parental support to express their LGBTQ interests.
“School is a safety net,” Elk Grove Unified parent Tiffany Woods said. “Additional support and validation is so important to help them get through the day.”
Another parent in the area, Pamela Dixon, said other clubs such as gardening clubs require permission from parents, but the controversial club was hidden from parents. did.
“This club didn’t require parental permission and was just set up without our knowledge,” Dixon said. on KXTV-TV.
